Expedition Cruise Planning Guide

Expedition Cruise FAQ

Embarking on a luxury expedition cruise requires detailed research. Unlike traditional mass-market ocean liners, expedition ships carry between 50 to 200 guests and sail to the world's most delicate, remote ecosystems. Our team has personally navigated the Drake Passage, tracked polar bears in Svalbard, and zodiac-landed in the Amazon and Galápagos. Below, we address the most common logistical, vessel, and packing questions.

Expedition cruises focus on active exploration, scientific education, close wildlife encounters, and rugged yet luxury travel in remote regions. Instead of theatrical production shows, casinos, and formal dress codes, you will participate in scientist-led lectures, citizen science, and multiple daily Zodiac landing excursions. The ships are small, ice-strengthened, and engineered to reach areas traditional ships cannot access.

Polar Class (PC) ratings denote a vessel's capability to safely navigate ice-choked waters. A Polar Class 6 (PC6) vessel (like the Seabourn Venture or Scenic Eclipse) can operate during summer and autumn in medium first-year ice. A Polar Class 2 (PC2) vessel (like PONANT's Le Commandant Charcot) is a double-acting luxury icebreaker capable of crushing multi-year polar pack ice to safely reach 90 degrees North (the Geographic North Pole).

The Antarctic expedition season spans the southern hemisphere summer from November through March:
  • November: Coldest temperatures but offering pristine snow, massive untouched icebergs, and nesting penguin rituals.
  • December & January: Longest daylight hours (20-24 hours) and the hatching of penguin chicks.
  • February & March: Best time for whale watching (humpbacks, minke, and orcas) and pushing further south into the Antarctic Circle due to melted pack ice.

Inclusions vary by operator. Ultra-luxury lines like Silversea and Abercrombie & Kent provide fully all-inclusive rates that cover charter flights, luxury pre-cruise hotels, transfers, daily shore excursions, open-bar beverages, and crew gratuities. Quark and HX Hurtigruten typically focus on the cruise experience but include high-performance parkas (to keep) and boot rentals (to use) on polar voyages. Our agency coordinates your entire door-to-door itinerary.

Expedition cruises accommodate a wide range of fitness levels. Standard excursions involve boarding Zodiac inflatable boats to access rocky shorelines, which requires basic mobility (stepping over a tube and walking on uneven ground). For active travelers, lines offer sea kayaking, snowshoeing, hiking, stand-up paddleboarding, and submarine dives. No prior experience is required, and expert teams provide complete safety briefings.

Because expedition ships carry very few passengers (often capped at 130-200 in Antarctica to comply with IAATO landing regulations), top suite categories and specialty permits fill up quickly. We recommend booking 12 to 18 months in advance. Booking early also secures flight availability and early-booking promotions.
